Kiwi/Possum Productions is mounting another classic this summer. The play will be the Greek tragedy Antigone, in the adaptation by French playwright Jean Anouilh.
The play is part of the Oedipus cycle. Oedipus had four children, of which Antigone is the youngest. Oedipus has died and his brother in law, Creon is now leader and he has decreed that the corpse of Antigone’s brother, who has rebelled against the state, will rot in public view as a lesson to the populace. Anyone attempting to bury him will be killed. Antigone insists on covering her brother’s body. She is arrested and a famous debate takes place between the activist and the pragmatic ruler as the tragedy unfolds.
Six local actors, Frank and Elisa Wells, Paul Maunder, Coban McBride, Caroline Selwood and Francis Darwin are joined by three young actors from Christchurch, Brooke Walford of the Hagley Theatre Company who plays Antigone, and Freya Johnson and Declan McLister. Blackball-based artist, Sue McElvey is designer with Elisa Wells in charge of costumes. Paul Maunder directs.
