“The soundtrack to dreams, myths and the dark landscapes of Aotearoa” – Graham Reid

Ponguru is a conversation between ancient and contemporary voices.
With Ponguru, Al Fraser and Phil Boniface bring together the many voices of ngā taonga pūoro and the low voice of the doublebass in an exploration of timbre, space, melody, and our shared musical language. Working in collaboration with Steve Garden, Ponguru has been released through Rattle Records to wide acclaim.

The performances on this West Coast South Island tour feature original compositions and improvisations from Ponguru, as well as new music developed from concerts Al and Phil have performed throughout Aotearoa and abroad.

The music from Ponguru has been toured with Chamber Music New Zealand, performed in Melbourne at the Tilde New Music Festival in 2019 and the Wellington Jazz Festival 2019.
